Daimler AG (Mercedes Benz), BMW Group, Audi (VW group), Porsche (VW group) and yes the Volkswagen Group (The Group comprises twelve brands from seven European countries: Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and MAN); yes, each one of these car brands or the automotive conglomerate belongs to Germany!

Fortune tried to come up with 10 reasons why these German car brands are so well accepted worldwide and in this article I’ll try to explore those points to find out more on “why German cars are indeed, The Best!”

1. First and foremost, Germany has a longer history of practicing automotive engineering than most countries. It was Karl Benz (A German engineer and one of the founders of the maker of Mercedes Benz cars) who, in the year 1879, first patented the internal combustion engine and then in 1886 he received a patent for his first automobile.

2. The Germans have a decorated history in motor racing, where their cars were pushed to their limits and their reputations were intermingled with the outcome. The infamous Green Hell — The Nürburgring racing track in the heart of Germany is a living proof of the German racing heritage. In the twenty-first century the likes of Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and the young F2 champion Mick Schumacher, all have carried the mantle of German racing heritage really well.

3. The German Autobahn, which actually have no speed limits are another area where the German carmakers can freely test the limits of their engineering. Any country with 8,000 miles of public roads that allows almost unlimited speed is destined to turn out cars capable of thriving in that environment. The German Autobahn is as unique as the cars the country produces.

4. The German automakers’ brand strength, specifically their “clarity, commitment, authenticity and relevance” is another reason the German cars are so well accepted world-wide. It’s a pride for anyone to own a brand which thrives on “German Engineering”. Think about BMW’s target goal of building every vehicle with a 50–50 weight distribution or the Mercedes-Benz Slogan is “The Best or Nothing”. It certainly embodies the quality of the vehicles these brands provides even today.

5. The “German Engineering” — As Fortune cites “Engineers occupy a high pedestal in a country that prizes technology and craftsmanship.” Known for their innovation, efficiency, concern for quality and technology, the German cars are a direct result of the German engineering prowess.

6. Being relevant to the consumers — It can be summed up from The Economist: “It’s quite simple, really — Germany makes things which people in countries with growing economies want to buy.”

7. The Brand mantras — arrogance with a purpose — Mercedes’ ads claim “The Best Or Nothing.” BMW says they build the “Ultimate Driving Machine.” And boy, they deliver what they say. This is why most of us lust about owning cars from these brands.

8. Sometimes, how much you pay for something — as opposed to its function — is the point of the exercise, such as charging $137,500 for a 2013 Turbo 911 Porsche with all-wheel-drive — and then asking for another $330 to apply the Porsche crest to the lid of the central console.

9. Exclusive and super-exclusive — Buyers of German cars love to complain about the costs of their purchases so those who can’t afford such luxuries understand just how deep their pockets are. If a regular $47,000 5-series BMW is not good enough for you then you can always upgrade to a specially equipped M5 for $90,695. Mercedes has made this an art form with its Black Series — special seats and trim, less weight — layered on top of its AMG performance upgrades that hike the price of a C-class coupe to around $125,000.

10. Being the benchmark in the automotive industry — Who can really go up against these German elites and finish in anything other than second place? Quality, vehicular dynamics, performance, heritage, technology and the overall of aura of German engineering; Fortune believes no other brands can match the elite on all fronts consistently. And that’s why Fortune thinks German cars rule the road.

Also, the supporting industries and companies (for example, Continental AG) around the main German car manufacturers supplying high-precision and high-quality automotive equipment also contribute massively to the world-famous German car industry.
